Moving Tips for the Do-It-Yourselfers

Approximately 50 million Americans will move this year. If you are one of them and you don't want to spend a fortune, try doing-it-yourself. With a little planning you can prevent over spending on moving expenses.

There are many reasons to move. About 16 percent of moves are work-related according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Don't pay a company to pack you up and move you. There are some easy ways to move yourself and stay on budget.

·              Truck and Trailer Rentals: Check your local big item retail hardware stores. Some rent trucks and trailers by the hour at a fraction of the cost of renting from a moving company.

·              Boxes: Collect boxes from friends, family, local grocery and liquor stores for free.

·              Packing Supplies: Use old newspapers to wrap valuables rather than purchasing expensive rolls of bubble wrap and other packing material.

·              Perishable Items: At your new place, plug in the refrigerator a day or two ahead of time. Use a cooler and ice packs to pack your frozen and perishable foods and put them in your new fridge. This will avoid an additional and expensive trip to the grocery store.

·              Mail: Get your change of address forms from the post office for free.

·              Packing: Avoid filling boxes so they are too heavy for you to lift without help.

·              Loading and Unloading: Make sure your path is clear to avoid mishaps from not being able to see well.

·              Tools: Hand trucks and dollies can be rented cheaply and should be used to transport multiple boxes and small furniture. Hand trucks/dollies should not be used to move items on stairs and are difficult to maneuver around tight turns.

·              Safety: When lifting, follow these simple steps to ensure your physical safety.
1.      Keep your back straight and bend your knees.
2.      Keep your head up and look straight ahead to ensure your back remains perpendicular to the ground.
3.      Hold the object securely and use your powerful leg muscles to lift the weight.
4.      Avoid twisting or turning at the waist. Instead turn your entire body by moving your hips first. This will force your shoulders to stay in line.
